Do you feel unprepared to teach your students coding?

You’re not alone!

When coding was added to our curriculum, I knew that I needed Dena from Miss Tech Queen to help me and all of you understand how to teach coding.

Dena Orfanitopoulos is an enrichment teacher in New Jersey. She currently teaches STEM class for kindergarten through fourth grade. Her experience includes teaching technology education for 5th grade, 6th grade and special education. In addition, she is a Google and Flipgrid certified teacher as well as an Osmo Ambassador. Her teaching philosophy includes technology, STEM, project-based learning, and hands-on activities. When she is not in the classroom, she runs an online store on Teachers Pay Teachers providing resources for other educators around the world. Dena has shared her passion for using technology in the classroom by presenting professional development workshops in her district, ISTE, Teach with Tech, and Launch Into Tech Online Conferences. She was even featured on PBS, NJTV’s Learning Live & Camp TV.

Dena has such amazing and practical ideas about how to use coding, computers and all things stem in her classroom, so she is sharing that with us today in this episode.

In Today’s Episode We Discuss:

  • Where to start when you need to teach coding
  • How to explain coding using very basic vocabulary
  • Ideas for incorporating unplugged coding activities
  • Why you don’t need to be an expert to teach your students coding
  • How learning the logic behind coding can benefit students in other subjects
  • How to mark or evaluate coding ability
  • What devices, robots and books you can use

I really hope that you got a ton of value out of this episode and feel prepared to take complicated coding language and make a practical lesson for your students.

Remember, you don’t have to be an expert at coding to give your students the ability to learn it! You’ve got this!
