October Activities

The theme this month is RESPECT. Students will develop skills over time through practice and repetition. These weekly lessons provide integrated teaching and learning so that all aspects of language are related and in context. Using a spiralled approach to teaching students will learn a variety of skills which are revisited throughout the year as they master different skills and goals within their literacy journey to become stronger readers and writers.

Week #1 – Say Something

The skills covered this week include: making personal connections between what we read and our own life, In writing students will be identifying the basic structure and parts of a paragraph. They will look at how to brainstorm ideas for writing while also learning how to identify the components of a sentence.

Week #2 – Playing War

Students will continue to look at how to make connections with a text and the world around them. In writing, they will look closely at a story map to identify the parts of a story. In their own writing they will explore how to plan out a story of their own following the same story map. Finally in grammar they will continue to explore sentences more about sentences.

Week #3 – Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Students will look more closely at how to respond to reading. Specifically how they can share the connections that they make with supporting details from the text. They will look at how to brainstorm and organize their ideas for writing a non fiction report. Finally, they will look at how the comma is used when writing a list.

Week #4 – The Name Jar

This week students will explore how making connections helps you understand point of view and perspective in a text. They will look deeper at understanding vocabulary when they read. In writing they will be introduced to a biography as a form of writing and look at the basic structure of this writing form. They will also look specifically at drafting introductions when writing. Finally they will look at conjunctions as a way to create complex and a variety of sentences in their writing.
