I take teaching math very seriously.  I think that this is next in importance to reading.  Basic computational skills in number sense and numeration is important.  I always tell my students the difference between myself and my husband and our ability to do math.  I up until a few years ago needed to write down all of my math questions using the standard algorithm.  Doing math in my head is not easy for me.  It has not been up to a few years ago that I have developed mental math strategies that worked for me and could reliably be depended on for me to use.  In fact there are still a few “times table” questions that I struggle with automatically recalling.  My husband on the other hand has ridiculously easy ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in his head.
